Frederick Living Partners with Ursinus College

For the second year, students from Ursinus College’s Exercise and Sport Science class “Wellness Fitness and Adult Populations” are becoming Wellness Partners with residents at Frederick Living during the 2013 spring semester.

It is a win-win situation for both. Ursinus College professor Dr. Laura Borsdorf stated, “Students are adding community based learning into their academic classroom experience while residents have the opportunity to provide valuable personal perspectives on the aging process and learn along with the students about the various stages of the adult life cycle.”

There will be two teaching nights at Frederick Living when residents will join the students in classroom learning. During the semester, students will be assisting residents in developing and implementing personal whole person wellness goals and will be assisting with Frederick Living’s functional senior fitness assessments in the spring.
There are also various times set up for developing personal relationships and having fun, including trips to Ursinus College’s sporting events, plays and dance performances. Also, Frederick Living will be holding a sports day for Wellness Partners in the spring to include bocce, Wii bowling, miniature golf, and billiards. “It has been a pleasure to watch relationships between wellness partners develop and thrive over time. Many students and residents from last year’s class are still communicating with each other. There is a lot more happening here than just academic learning!” explained Jan Morris, Director of Community Life at Frederick Living.
